STAR-NET HALLEY'S COMET TOUR TO COZUMEL, MEXICO
Halley's Comet is a poor sight before Spring,
and nearly impossible to see from USA in Spring!
An AFFORDABLE Expedition to view Comet Halley,
and a vacation package to assure enjoyment.
A STAR-NET Promotional Event: a week in beautiful Cozumel,
arranged by Chuck and Ann Cole for STAR-NET.
VACATION FEATURES:
8 days, 8 nights, April 5 - 13, 1986
Hotel Sol Caribe, (4-star, on the Caribbean)
Transport to observing site included in tour package
Easy access to major Mayan ruins
Snorkeling, swimming, diving, fishing, shopping
ASTRONOMICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Located at 20 degrees N. Latitude
Halley's head will be approx 40 degrees above horizon
Extremely dark skies - only ocean in Halley's direction
Weather in April features cool, clear nights
Dates planned span Halley's closest approach
Telescope and camera provided for group project
After-dinner "rap sessions" and banquet
LOCATION: Cozumel is an island located just off the Yucatan Peninsula
in the Western Caribbean. Our hotel and all civilization on the island
is located on the western side, facing the mainland. Observing is
planned for the eastern side of the island, 20 miles from any lights on
the island itself. To the southeast, where Halley will appear, there is
nothing but ocean for over 1000 miles. The observing site and skies
will be suitably dark for general observing as well as Halley-watching.
TOUR PLAN: A block of rooms has been reserved at the Hotel Sol Caribe,
a 4-star hotel on the beach. A block of seats has also been reserved
on Mexicana Airlines, leaving Miami at 2:40 PM on April 5th. We have
a professional travel agent as tour co-ordinator for all persons joining
us. Arrangements have been made for several mini-buses to support the
nightly observing trips on Cozumel. Chuck will share a telescope with
the group for part of each evening, and devote one camera (and film)
fully to a group photo effort for the week. A sumptuous buffet-style
banquet is planned for our last night on the island. No definite plans
have been made for the days - you are free to do whatever you enjoy:
tour the Mayan ruins on the island, rent a motorbike and explore, go
snorkeling or scuba diving, deep sea fishing, shopping in the village,
or just lie by the pool or on the beach. There will be ample
opportunity for socializing with your fellow astronomers, as well.
